Moving Displaced People from Community Halls - Joint Media Briefing by Provincial Government and City of Cape Town

26 August 2008
From Thursday, some 1 000 displaced people will be moved out of 11 community halls across Cape Town, as well as from Soetwater and Silwerstroom. They can return to their communities or be relocated to Blue Waters or Harmony Park. Youngsfield will remain open but will not receive additional people.

Blue Waters and Harmony Park have been reconfigured to accept them. Of the initial estimated 20 000 people displaced after incidents of xenophobic violence earlier this year, just more than 3 300 remain.

The process of moving the displaced people and bringing to a conclusion the declared Provincial disaster, will be explained by senior officials from the Provincial Government and the City of Cape Town working together as a joint task team.

Date: Wednesday, 27 August 2008
