Minister steps in to help Rape Crisis
Rape Crisis is one of nearly 2000 NGOs currently funded by the Department of Social Development for services rendered in partnership with government. These NGOs are independent entities, partially funded by government, and ultimately responsible for their own fundraising in order to remain sustainable.
With the increase in sexual offences, we have recognised the need for additional training of victim empowerment volunteers, and will provide further funding to make use of their expertise in this regard.
Despite further funding from my department, they will still face a shortfall and to this end I want to challenge the private sector to come on board and make a difference.
We will shortly be embarking on a campaign for 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children. There cannot be a more opportune time to support the work done not only in terms of counselling rape survivors, but to roll out preventative campaigns to bring about behaviour change.
The Western Cape Government values this vital service. I'd like to see the private sector take up this challenge and help to keep the Rape Crisis doors open.
