Minister Plato and Minister Mbombo empowers Khayelitsha Neighbourhood Watch

25 September 2016

On Monday, 26 September 2016, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, and Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, will hand over equipment and certificates in recognition of the first accredited Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) in the Western Cape to complete First Aid skills training.

The handover of the First Aid certificates and equipment to the Neighbourhood Watch members of Town 2, Khayelitsha, follows the First Aid training the members received at Tygerberg Hospital from the Western Cape Health Department.

As part of the Western Cape Government’s Alcohol Harms Reduction Game Changer, Neighbourhood Watches are being empowered with the necessary skills, equipment and support to provide holistic safety services to the communities they serve, including First Aid.

The three Alcohol Harms Reduction areas in the province see NHW members manning the Safety Kiosks supplied by the Department of Community Safety, which provides a contact point for communities to report any safety concerns or incidents. From there it can then be rapidly escalated to the police or law enforcement agencies.

With the additional First Aid training, the Safety Kiosks and NHW members also provide a contact point for individuals who have been injured, to provide immediate interim support until emergency services can respond.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility and through the Alcohol Harms Reduction Game Changer the Western Cape Government is empowering every day community members to help each other and create safer environments within communities across the province.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews.

Note: All media are invited to attend.
