Minister Meyer extends condolences on passing of Agri-Worker, Doreen Frieslaar

6 January 2021

With great sadness, I have learnt of the tragic passing of Doreen Frieslaar, an agri-worker employed at Meerlust Farms (Pty) Ltd, in an accident between De Doorns and Worcester, late Monday afternoon.

Following the same accident, a further 23 Agri-Workers were hospitalised.

Agri-workers play a critical role in food production and the economy of the Western Cape. They are our unsung heroes.

During Covid-19 lockdowns, our agri-workers kept on working to produce food on our tables.

I wish the injured a speedy recovery and extend my deepest condolences to the deceased's family and friends.

The Western Cape Government has adopted safety and dignity as strategic priorities.

At all times, we must ensure the safety and dignity of our farmers and agri-workers in the Western Cape.

The Western Cape Minister of Transport and Public Works, Bongikosi Madikizela and I have discussed the matter of agri-worker transportation and are calling on the agricultural sector to take greater care to ensure the safety of their workers.

Transporting agri-workers on open trucks poses a significant threat to the safety of workers.

Law enforcement agencies will stop these trucks and impose hefty fines to avoid any further loss of life.

Please help us to save lives and livelihoods in the Western Cape.

Let us promote the safety and protect the dignity and well-being of our agri-workers in the Western Cape.
