Minister Madikizela Appoints a New Chairperson For Tribunal

14 October 2016

The Minister for Human Settlements in the Western Cape, Bonginkosi Madikizela has appointed a new Chairperson, Mr Thomas Cloete, for the Western Cape Rental Housing Tribunal.

Mr Cloete has been appointed for a period of three years with effect from 01 October 2016. He is an admitted attorney as well as a qualified conveyancer by profession. Mr Cloete was also an acting magistrate in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court and Wynberg Regional Court and brings a wealth of experience to the current Board. The Minister wishes him well in his new tenure.

The Western Cape Rental Housing Tribunal provides a free service to tenants and landlords in the Western Cape. Its main function is dispute settlement between tenants and landlords.  Most of the complaints originate from the Cape Metropolitan Area.  However, hearings and mediations outside Cape Town are held as close as possible to the point of complaint.  Hearings have been held in George, Vredenburg, Vredendal, Grabouw, Worcester and Hermanus.

The Tribunal seeks to;

  1. Harmonise relationships between landlords and tenants in the rental housing sector.
  2. Resolve disputes that arise due to unfair practices.
  3. Inform landlords and tenants about their rights and obligations in terms of the Rental Housing Act.
  4. Make recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
