Minister Madikizela and Minister Fritz to Help Demolish a Shack in Khayelitsha

26 April 2012

The Western Cape Government Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, and Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, will help demolish the shack of the Maswati family on the morning of Freedom Day, 27 April 2012.

The Maswati family will receive a subsidised house, and construction of the new house will begin on 2 May 2012. Recently, some members of the Maswati family moved to one of the houses in the Nelson Mandela Legacy Project in Blue Downs, with one of the family members being a 12-year-old boy with lung cancer. The move was celebrated by Ministers Madikizela and Fritz and featured on SABC Morning Live.

However, other members of the extended family still lived in the shack and were unable to be accommodated in the Legacy Project house. After visiting the family shack, Minister Madikizela pledged to help the rest of the family get a proper house.

The Maswati family has been included in the Mzimhlope PHP project in Site C, Khayelitsha, and will receive a subsidy for the house to be built. The house will be large enough to accommodate the remaining family members, and will take around four weeks to build. The extended family will stay with friends and relatives until the house is ready.
