Minister Carlisle Responds to Golden Arrow Bus Service and City of Cape Town Dispute

20 June 2012

Media Statement by Robin Carlisle, Minister of Transport and Public Works

Dialogue between the city and Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS) must and will continue.

I have taken note of the GABS media statement indicating they are considering court action to resolve differences over the implementation of integrated transport in the city.

I am in contact with both parties and am satisfied that the issues in contention can be resolved without legal action, if necessary through speedy arbitration.

The parties have been encouraged to maintain dialogue as it is in their interests, as it is the interests of the province, for them to reach an amicable resolution.

GABS and the City of Cape Town are major players in the development of an effective integrated public transport system in the city and the province will provide the necessary assistance to ensure this amicable solution is reached.

I am also satisfied that neither party seeks to prejudice the interests or rights of the other nor, most importantly, those of the commuter. I am further reassured by GABS' commitment made in their statement in this regard.
