Minister Bredell responds to service delivery challenges

The Ministerial and Mayoral (MinMay) provides Minister, Executive Mayors and relevant stakeholders to discuss and debate the various issues and  challenges faces the municipalities.

The third MinMay meeting joined by the Executive Mayors from all municipalities and various stakeholders in the province is held today, 23 June  2022 at Swellendam Showgrounds under the theme:

 In welcoming the mayors, Minister Anton Bredell spoke of the importance for municipalities to proactively respond to service delivery challenges     facing the community.

The development of our partnership with various stakeholders is to provide ensure direction, alignment and commitment to deliver services to citizens. There are so many opportunities for us to work together on cross cutting challenges inhibit basic service delivery 

     The main objectives of the MinMay were for the political and administrative leadership to:

  • Setting the scene: Local Governance in uncertain times
  • Reflect on the future role and functions of district municipalities and secondary cities
  • Provide an update on the implementation framework and timelines of the Traditional and KhoiSan Leadership Act
  • Provide the status and progress on the Thusong Programme in the Western Cape
  • Provide briefing on hosting of the Netball World Cup: Opportunities and implications for municipalities
  • An update on the implementation framework and timelines of the Traditional and KhoiSan Leadership Act
  • Briefing on hosting of the Netball World Cup: Opportunities and implications for municipalities
  • Presented by Mr G Redman HOD: Cultural Affairs & Sport
  • Update on Energy Resilience and Eskom-related matters

•  Policy & regulatory updates

•  Wheeling frameworks/ agreements

•  Municipal pooled buying

•  Scaling of SSEG opportunities

•  Update on Eskom battery storage pilot

Executive Mayor Garden Route Muncipality, Mr M Booysen said, our determination to deepen collaboration and cooperation between province and municipalities will help us to take that next step forward.”

During the meeting, officials from various stakeholders were provided a platform to present their projects and to share some ideas.

The event was well attended and the stakeholders were engaging each other. The issues raised and discussed at the MinMay will now be taken forward by Minister Bredell and feedback will be provided to the mayors.
