Metro Police's Camera Response Unit Rescues Traffic Officer from Robbery

12 September 2010

One person was arrested in central Cape Town early this morning as he attempted to rob a Traffic Officer of his official firearm.

At about 06:35, the Metro Police's CCTV Centre dispatched two Metro Police Officers to a shooting incident on the corners of Longmarket and Buitengracht Streets.

On arrival, the officers saw a City Traffic Officer in a struggle on the sidewalk with another person. On closer investigation one of the Metro Police officers noticed that the suspect was trying to reach for the Traffic Officer's firearm and they then took control of the situation.

An Orbis Security guard who also responded to the scene sustained light injuries when one shot went off during the struggle.

The suspect was arrested for attempted murder and attempted robbery.
