Metro Cop Murder Condemned

16 February 2016

Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

I condemn in the strongest possible sense the murder of Constable Ben Koopman, a City of Cape Town Metro Police Officer, who was fatally shot in front of his house in Eerste River yesterday.

I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the officer’s immediate family, his wife and three children, as well as his friends and law enforcement colleagues for their loss.

I trust the South African Police Service is already conducting a full investigation as the cold blooded killing of a member of the law enforcement fraternity cannot be left unpunished.

I urge the community of Eerste River, or anyone else, with information regarding the attack on Constable Koopman to report it to their nearest police station, or if they would like to remain anonymous they can call CrimeLine on 08600 10111.

Though no reward will bring back Constable Koopman to his loved ones, I sincerely hope that anyone with credible information on the incident will do the right thing and assist the police and law enforcement authorities, even if the only motivation is the R50 000 posted by the City of Cape Town for information in this regard.
