Media Alert: Western Province Brings The Currie Cup To People Of The Province

28 October 2014

Today, 28 October 2014, I will be joining the Western Province rugby team who will be driven through the streets of Cape Town, Mitchells Plain and Gugulethu on an open-top bus in order for Capetonians to join in the Currie Cup celebrations.

The Western Cape Government congratulates the Western Province Rugby team on their victory over the Golden Lions in the Currie Cup final on Saturday.

Sport is one of the great unifiers of our country, and on Saturday, we could certainly feel the sense of pride of our Capetonians, with blue and white shirts worn everywhere and cries of “WP, jou lekker ding” echoing down the streets.

It was a great moment when the final whistle blew and we knew the Currie Cup would return to our province for the next year. I also want to thank them for being such great role-models for our younger generation. Aspiring sport stars look up to these athletes and are encouraged when they see their successes. I hope that they will continue to inspire young players to follow in their footsteps.

I encourage the people of the province to show their appreciation and support for our rugby team by joining in today's festivities.

Let us unite and continue supporting all our provincial sports men, women and teams as they compete at a national and international level.

Note to editors: the procession will be at City Hall from approximately 11:00 for the handover.
