Media Alert: New Health Initiative to be Launched at Western Cape Schools

25 November 2013

The Western Cape Ministers of Health and Education, Theuns Botha and Donald Grant, will be announcing an exciting health initiative by the Western Cape Government that will expand access to healthcare services to school learners.

A fleet of five wellness mobile units will be launched across the province next year.

The wellness units will be staffed by professional health practitioners that will screen the health of learners and provide diagnostic assessment and treatment options.

Typical School Health Screening Will Include:

  • Learner’s vision and hearing
  • Ear, eye and skin examinations
  • The testing of gross and fine motor skills, mental health, speech and tuberculosis
  • Dental healthcare

On Monday, 25 November 2013, a presentation of a typical mobile unit will be given. Media will also be briefed on the rollout of the programme, its functions, funding and its goals.

There will be an opportunity to view the inside of a unit. A group of young learners will be screened in one of the mobiles.

This initiative will drastically improve the school healthcare system and the lives of young learners, taking healthcare directly to those least able to access it.
