MEDIA ALERT: Minister Plato hosts Nyanga cluster PNP consultation

20 October 2016

This weekend, Friday 21 October 2016 to Saturday 22 October 2016, the Western Cape Department of Community Safety will host the Policing Needs and Priorities (PNP) determination consultation sessions for the Nyanga policing cluster.

Minister Plato will also be joined at the PNP engagement tomorrow by Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, to hand over certificates and equipment to qualifying Neighbourhood Watch members following the First Aid training the members received from the Western Cape Health Department.

As part of the Western Cape Government’s Alcohol Harms Reduction Game Changer, Neighbourhood Watches are being empowered with the necessary skills, equipment and support to provide holistic safety services to the communities they serve, including First Aid.

The communities of Bishop Lavis, Elsies Rivier, Gugulethu, Manenberg, Nyanga and Phillipi East have the opportunity over the next two days to determine their policing needs and priorities and to contribute to the Safety Plan, as a safety blueprint for communities which provides a shared ownership, responsibility and accountability to safety.

The consultative PNP engagements will include representatives of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Municipalities, Community Police Forums (CPFs), Community Safety Forums (CSF), non-governmental organisations, community based organisations, faith based organisations, Neighbourhood Watches (NHW), and other local safety stakeholders.

A key feature of the 2016/17 PNP process includes the extensive training and workshopping with the Neighbourhood Watches and Community Policing Forums – the pulse of citizen-led safety interventions in our communities.

This weekend’s consultation sessions forms part of the annual determination of the policing needs and priorities in the province which will see the Department of Community Safety holding public consultation sessions for each of the 16 police clusters between May and October this year.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews.
