Media Alert: MEC De Lille To Address Khayelitsha Residents at OR Tambo Sports Complex Tomorrow Morning

19 October 2010

Social Development Minister Patricia de Lille, will tomorrow address the Khayelitsha community in the OR Tambo Sports Complex, about the progress of the Department's Community Nutrition and Development Centres (CNDCs) strategy for the area.

Around three thousand (3000) beneficiaries of the CNDCs in Khayelitsha are expected to attend the event.

Also invited are the two (2) service providers in the area and the local leadership, including councillors, the Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF), other business leaders and Sanco.

The general aim of the Centres is to provide cooked, nutritious meals to individuals and households that cannot feed themselves due to hunger and poverty, while also linking them to a wide range of development initiatives and other economic opportunities.

It is also the Department's aim that CNDCs go some way towards achieving Millennium Development Goal one (1) - of halving poverty and hunger by 2015.

The Minister is conducting site visits to these centres during October's Social Development Month to evaluate the impact of the CNDC Programme.

The CNDCs have sought to improve on the soup kitchen model, which was riddled with the following challenges:

  • Serving of soup and bread only;
  • Provision of food on certain days of the week only;
  • No record of beneficiaries;
  • Poor co-ordination of services and duplication;
  • No support of beneficiaries beyond provision of food (lack of development of beneficiaries)

This is the Minister's second such visit this month.

Members of the media are invited to attend.

Details are as follows:

Date: Thursday 21 October 2010
Venue: OR Tambo Sports Complex, Lansdowne Road
Time: 11H00 to 12H30

Refreshments will be served.
