Media Alert: Learners in Fisantekraal Consumed Expired Chewing Gum

This morning, learners from the Trevor Manuel Primary School in Fisantekraal consumed expired chewing gum. The Western Cape Department of Health's Emergency Medical Services treated approximately 200 learners between the ages of seven and 14. They were then transported to Kraaifontein, Delft and Elsies River Community health centres as well as Tygerberg and Karl Bremer Hospital. Children were also treated at the Fisantekraal Clinic but were discharged.

Learners consumed the energy chewing gum which contained excessive energy levels, raising their blood glucose levels too rapidly, making them hungry and resulting in vomiting; symptoms inlcuded stomach cramps, headaches, lethargy and vomiting.

The Environmental Health officers from the City of Cape Town's Health Department investigated the matter and samples of the goods were taken for laboratory tests.

Earlier this evening, the vast majority of the learners were discharged while several children were kept for observation. At Kraaifontein CHC, three children were put on drip, while at Tygerberg Hospital, another seven were kept for monitoring.

The Western Cape Department of Health appeals to the communities NOT to eat food which has already expired as it could be very dangerous.
