Media Alert: Final Closure of De Doorns Safety Site

5 May 2010

7 May 2010, Anton Bredell Provincial Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, together with Charles Ntsomi, Mayor of Breede Valley Municipality, will announce the final closing of the De Doorns Safety Site. Following the advice of the Reintegration Committee, the Breede Valley Municipal Council resolved on 30 April 2010 that the reintegration of the displaced Zimbabweans at the De Doorns Sports field would be finalised by 31 May 2010.

The De Doorns refugee camp, situated on the outskirts of a farming town near Worcester, came about after the outbreak of xenophobic attacks in various townships across South Africa in May 2008. On 17 November 2009 the tranquil livelihood of the agri-based town of De Doorns was shattered when approximately 3000 foreign nationals (mostly from Zimbabwe) were displaced from the informal settlement of Stofland.

All media are invited to attend:

Date: Friday 7th May

Time: 8:30 - 9:30
