MEDIA ALERT: Final 16 Days of Activism Campaign events to kick-start 365 Days

9 December 2016

Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, is continuing to observe the 16 Days of Activism campaign for No Violence Against Women and Children today, 9 December 2016 in Eastridge, Mitchells Plain and will have the final campaign event tomorrow, 10 December 2016, in Chicago, Paarl East.

Minister Plato will also use the opportunity tomorrow in Paarl East before the closing of the 16 Days of Activism campaign for No Violence Against Women and Children to kick-start his 365 Days of Action to help create safer environments for all in the province, especially the most vulnerable such as women, children and the youth, as well as marginalised communities such as the LGBTQI at the launch tomorrow, 10 December 2016, of the Youth, Safety and Religious Partnership (YSRP) programme for the 2016/17 summer school holiday period.

This year, the Department of Community Safety is encouraging those who are suffering from abuse and those who know of abuse taking place, to break the silence around violence and abuse in our communities with the theme: SPEAK OUT – SILENCE TO STRENGTH.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility the Department of Community Safety is taking its awareness outreaches to the streets in support of 16 Days of Activism where Minister Plato will be facilitating awareness drives and victim related services in various communities. The annual, internationally observed, 16 Days of Activism awareness campaign is officially observed between 25 November and 10 December.

As part of government’s responsibility in helping to create safer environments in the province, the YSRP programme will see the Department of Community Safety provide R3.4 million for the December/January (Festive Season) holiday period in partnership with up to 107 faith based organisations, with the aim to reach an estimated 10 880 youths through these programmes who are often at risk during school holidays.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews.
