Media Alert: City Educates Children on Dangers of Exposure to Emissions from Burning Metal, Tyres and Cables

11 January 2011

The City of Cape Town's Air Quality Management Section has partnered with the Fire and Life Safety Education, Solid Waste and Metal Theft sections to launch an awareness campaign on the dangers of retrieving metal by burning tyres, scrap metal and copper cables.

The first instalment of the campaign was launched in the Vissershok area during October last year. This bushy and isolated area just off the N7 is a popular spot for burning materials and residents were educated about the dangers of attempting to retrieve metal by burning tyres, scrap metal and copper cables.

As a follow-up to this programme, presentations will be delivered to the children in the Vissershok area. They will be educated on the dangers of being exposed to the dark smoke emitted when scrap, waste or tyres are burned; and on handling emergency situations when, for example, an uncontrolled fire develops.

During the programme, the 107 public education and awareness section will inform the children about the 107 emergency number. Unauthorised burning of tyres, copper wires or scrap metal, as well as general emergencies and illegal dumping, can be reported to this number.

Time: 13:00 to 14:00

Venue: Brick and Clay Brick Yard, Frankdale Road, Vissershok (Off the N7)
