MEC Responds to COSAS Statement on Mikro

12 July 2005
Western Cape MEC for Education Cameron Dugmore has called for calm after a media statement was put out by the Congress of SA Students to "invade" the Mikro Primary School in the Western Cape.

This comes after the judgement by the Supreme Court of Appeal, upholding an earlier judgement of the Cape High Court to set aside the Western Cape Education Department's directive to the school to enrol 21 English speaking learners.

Said MEC Dugmore: "I have spoken to the national Cosas leadership, and have cautioned against actions, which do not assist in resolving the problems we face. I will be briefing them on all the issues involved.

"Now is the time for cool heads. As far as the possible appeal is concerned we have been studying the judgement and engaging with the national department. We will be making a decision in this regard before the 18th of July.

"Our approach must be guided by the need to work together with all stakeholders to ensure access to education while respecting the provisions of the Constitution and the SA Schools Act in regard to language in education."
