MEC Dyanti Address to Integrated Community

13 May 2007
MEC Dyantyi will be addressing the Integrated Community "Our Pride" which include Gugulethu and Eerste Rivier Beneficiaries

To be in line with the Western Cape Sustainable Human Settlement Strategy objectives, MEC Dyantyi will on Sunday May 13, 2007 address the beneficiaries of "Our Pride" project, which include Gugulethu and Eerste Rivier communities. This project is one of the Minister's priority special projects as it seeks to integrate different communities (Africans and Coloureds). Both communities have already engaged themselves in a savings scheme to improve the sizes and quality of their houses.

This project was initiated by the Gugulethu and Eerste Rivier communities through a series of meetings with the Department of Local Government and Housing. These meetings led to the initiation of a joint forum between these communities. The project embodies the concepts introduced in the Western Cape Sustainable Human Settlements Strategy.

The Gugulethu / Eerste Rivier project seeks to address the housing demand of back-yard dwellers of both communities, through a possible People's Housing Programme (PHP) project. The MEC has offered provincial land to these communities for development. Two portions of land were identified (erf 105 and 107) in Eerste Rivier.

After numerous meetings between the stakeholders that include, Department of Local Government and Housing, The representatives of the two communities involved, The City of Cape Town and the outside facilitators, it has been decided to gather all relevant stakeholders under one roof and finalise the finer details moving forward.

The MEC will on Sunday listen to all community views regarding this project and announce a way forward thereof. The PHP sub-directorate will be required to conduct workshops to the beneficiaries and explain the PHP process and its implementation. The current PHP facilitator chosen by the project could not facilitate till the bulk services are done. The department would need to appoint a consultant for a feasibility study and the land development.

All media are invited to cover this remarkable integration development in the province of all people.
