Matric Achievers Get More Awards

Matric candidates who received awards for excellence in the 2007 exams.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has presented additional awards to eight candidates from previously disadvantaged contexts, who excelled in the 2007 Senior Certificate Examinations.

Mecer donated laptop computers for five of the candidates, while Maskew Miller Longman donated R5 000 for each of three candidates. All of the candidates passed with distinction and six subjects with distinction.

The candidates who received the laptops are:

 

  • Xola Mtshisa, who studied at the Cape Academy for Mathematics, Science and Technology
  • Rizqah Mohamed, formerly of Belgravia Secondary School
  • Tauhier Ebrahim, formerly of Livingstone High School. He is studying Business Science at UCT
  • Mu'azzam Kippie, formerly of Rylands High School
  • Devon Leukes, formerly of the Cape Academy for Mathematics, Science and Technology

 

Candidates who each received awards of R5 000 were:

  • Saa-ima Natha, formerly of Rylands High School
  • Tasneem Galant, formerly of Livingstone High School, and
  • Byron Parrott, formerly of the Klein Nederburg Secondary School

 

The candidates have all embarked on higher education this year, in subjects ranging from business science to chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, medicine and Islamic studies.

Said Western Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore: "We are extremely proud of these candidates who have shown what it takes to achieve, despite difficult circumstances. We congratulate them for their achievements, as well as their teachers, principals and parents, who have provided the kind of support every candidate needs to excel. We expect them to continue to make us proud of their achievements on higher education level."
