Malmesbury CARES complex offers safe space for community

9 June 2022

On Wednesday, 8 June 2022, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais officially opened the Malmesbury CARES (Culture, Arts, Recreation, Education, Sport) complex.

The complex, located between Liebenberg Primary School and Schoonspruit High School, is a shared facility to be used by the schools in the area. It offers learners of various ages the facilities to participate in sport codes such as softball, mini soccer, tennis, drum majorettes, chess and various track and field events. Learners can also take part in arts and culture activities facilitated by the MOD Programme.

This facility is one of four that have been launched across the province to offer school children the opportunity to participate in sport using world-class facilities. It was built as a partnership between the Departments of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Education, Public Works and Provincial Treasury and cost R37 million to complete.

The CARES complexes promote a shared facility approach – the facilities are available for use of all schools in the district and can be shared between up to 24 schools in a neighbourhood. The Malmesbury complex will also be used by a local ECD facility, as well as a group of active senior citizens – therefore offering a safe space for the youngest and oldest of the community.

Minister Marais said: “We are very proud to open this facility today. Not only does it provide our learners with top class facilities to participate in sport, but it also offers them a safe space to stay at after school. We urge the community to take ownership of this facility, to keep it safe and to ensure that it can be used for many years to develop our youth.”

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport continues to provide support to youth across the province to offer them safe spaces in which they can grow their skills and talents.
