Kannaland electricity situation being addressed

15 January 2016

The Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, is aware of the challenges being experienced in Kannaland municipality with regards to electricity.

Minister Bredell has noted Eskom’s decision that electricity supply to Kannaland may be interrupted from 26 February 2016 if payment of outstanding debt is not made.

The Minister has accordingly already taken steps to address the situation. These include delegating the department of Local Government to liaise with the municipality to offer assistance. The minister has also requested from Kannaland municipality an immediate and actionable plan that would address the Eskom debt situation.

The municipality this morning agreed to inform the minister in writing of the plan to address the challenges. This plan is expected before close of business today.

The Minister and the department are fully committed to resolving the matter between Eskom and the municipality as swiftly as possible.

“It would not be in the interest of anyone if Eskom had to cut off the municipality’s electricity. Working with the department’s officials, I believe Kannaland municipality may be able to address situation quickly,” Bredell says.
