International Soccer Returns to Cape Town

20 May 2012

International football will once again unite soccer enthusiasts from across the country. The City of Cape Town, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and SAFA Cape Town launched the eight-nation under-20 International Football Challenge on 17 May 2012. This is the second time the tournament is being held after a successful inaugural event in South Africa in the run up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, has described this Western Cape partnership as an example of people working better together. "We want to show the world that Cape Town is a place that promotes soccer and where the people love soccer", he said.

South Africa, Argentina, Nigeria, Ghana, Brazil, Japan, Kenya and Cameroon will be competing for the cup from 25 May to 3 June at the world-class Cape Town and Athlone stadiums. Fans can also see the teams in action at practice venues across the city. Mr Norman Arendse, President of SAFA Cape Town, urged local football fans to attend matches and see the next generation of football superstars emerge.

DCAS's promotion of sport and culture contributes to social inclusion and boosts the local economy. The under-20 soccer tournament is a welcome addition to Cape Town's calendar of major sporting events in 2012 and will assist the city to reach its goal of becoming the events capital of the African continent.

Mr Grant Pascoe, Executive Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing for the City of Cape Town, expressed the hope that the competition would be a springboard for many youngsters, both local and international, to launch successful professional football careers. The host city will be inviting 150 community volunteers to contribute to a successful event. This will support the spirit of volunteerism and give people an opportunity to be part of the excitement.

The tournament will kick off at the Cape Town Stadium on Africa Day, Friday, 25 May. Match tickets are available from Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets at a price of R50 (grand stands) and R20 (open stands).
