Highest Breath Alcohol Reading Recorded in Mossel Bay

On 8 and 9 August 2014, 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 716 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic services safety campaign.

Of the 2 716 vehicles stopped, 1 377 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 27 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay at 1.04 mg/1000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1000 ml.

Speeding offences were issued to 789 drivers after 2 446 vehicles were screened for speeding.

Various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness resulted in 245 fines being issued to the amount of R301 600.

The highest speed that was recorded:

  • 172 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 135 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Caledon service area.
  • 132 km/h in a 80 km/h zone on the N1 in the Somerset west service area.

Five other arrests:

  • 2 x stolen vehicle (Brackenfell).
  • 2 x impounded (Somerset West).
  • 1 x false documentation (Oudtshoorn).

This weekend 12 fatalities were reported:

  • 1 x passenger (Leeu Gamka).
  • 1 x passenger (Caledon).
  • 1 x passenger (Malmesburg).
  • 1 x pedestrian (Khayelitsha).
  • 1 x pedestrians (Malmesburg).
  • 1 x pedestrians (Wolseley).
  • 1 x pedestrian (Bellville).
  • 1 x pedestrians(Kraaifontein).
  • 1 x cyclists (Asthon).
  • 1 x cyclists (Stellenbosch).
  • 1 x driver (Stellenbosch).
  • 1 x driver (Malmesburg).
