High Spirits at Metropole Golden Games

7 October 2013

Sporting spirits were high during the Metropole Golden Games on 4 October 2013 at the Blue Downs Sports Stadium. The senior citizens, or “mature citizens” as they prefer to called, brought their A-game to the day. Upon arrival, excited participants sang and danced, with some singing the ever-popular “Who are, who are, who are we” sports chant to get the competition going.

Despite very windy conditions, the senior citizens took part in various activities such as jukskei, rugby-ball-throw and the very popular passing-the-ball. Some participants showed off their prowess in the 100- and 200-metre sprints, saying that the trick to running in windy conditions was to “go with the wind”.

A member of Club 60 said the club looks forward to the Games every year, and is grateful for support from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. He also said that the games strengthen the bond between the Western Cape Government and its senior citizens.

Participants were determined to win their events, as they knew that winners from this event go on to represent the Western Cape at the National Golden Games in Boksburg later this month.

The Games gave the senior citizens a chance to show off their sporting skills, and also gave them a chance to show that even though they are older than some of us, they still have what it takes to be active in sports and our communities.
