Great Enthusiasm At First Music And Career Workshop

9 February 2016

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) has partnered with the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the national Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) by conducting youth music and career workshops. This is the ideal opportunity to expose young musicians to bigger platforms in an attempt to broaden their understanding of the music industry and worldviews.

As part of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s commitment to the development of the Music Industry Arts, the festival proudly presents a series of workshops, the first of which was on Saturday 6 February 2016.

This development component explores various elements of the jazz world and includes music workshops, music business, arts journalism, master classes as well as many other workshops. Young musicians have been selected from various music organisations from across the province to be part of this music development workshop to further their music development.

The workshops take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and will run until 27 February, showcasing various bands that have participated in the workshops. The most promising bands get afforded an opportunity to perform at the main festival stage. An all-star band, which comprises of different youths from different schools and music programmes, will be chosen and given the opportunity to perform at the Greenmarket Free Concert.

Festival Director of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Billy Domingo, addressed the participants and encouraged them to keep up their good work. “Always be yourself. I hope that out of this workshop, I am going to find some true, motivated people to work with,” he said.

DCAS supports the development and promotion of young talent, BETTER TOGETHER.
