Grabouw school gets new junior traffic training centre

The Department of Transport of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) and Theewaterskloof Municipality are confident that the new junior traffic training centre at the Kathleen Murray Primary School in Grabouw will help to reduce child pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

This simulated road environment features a number of permanent road signs and markings, and a parking area. This provides a valuable opportunity for learners to learn how to use roads safely and responsibly.

A group of learners from Groenberg Secondary School, who recently represented the Western Cape at the Participatory Educational Techniques (PET) national competition, helped with painting and did road safety talks at the facility. These activities formed part of national October Transport Month.

Christopher Abrahams, DTPW road safety officer in the Overberg District, says learners at this school are particularly vulnerable because they have to cross Ou Kaapse Weg, a road on which speeding is common. “We are hoping this facility will become a visible symbol of road safety and where learners can be taught how to apply good road safety habits as they grow up,” he said.

As part of this month’s #SaveKidsLives initiative, we are encouraging people to model good pedestrian behaviour for children so that they learn good road habits. Together, we can set a good example for children by consistently adhering to the rules of the road.
