Good progress on new Tulbagh primary school

19 October 2016

The construction of a new primary school in Tulbagh is progressing well. Construction started in July 2015 and is expected to reach practical completion in December this year. This R71 million project was commissioned by the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

The project is 82% complete. Most of the school buildings will comprise a framed concrete structure and a mixture of face brick and painted infill walls. The school building will provide top-quality accommodation for 1 250 learners, as well as sport facilities and other amenities.

Teaching facilities will comprise 28 standard classrooms, two double Grade R classrooms, two multi-media classrooms, and one science laboratory room. The complex will also have a hall with toilet facilities, an administrative building, and caretaker’s facilities. The contractor is currently busy with interior work in classrooms and work in the courtyards.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) employment and skills training opportunities. Life skills training was made available to 15 local candidates and technical skills training to another 15. In addition, six National Youth Service learners received training in carpentry.

Contract expenditure on targeted enterprises to date is R6,5 million, R817 500 has gone to suppliers and manufacturers, and R3,4 million has been spent on targeted local labour. DTPW remains committed to realising its vision of leading in the delivery of government infrastructure and related services. This project helps to give effect to Provincial Strategic Goal 1: “Creating opportunities for growth and jobs”.
