The officers noticed a truck and a light delivery vehicle (LDV) on the N1 just before the Brackenfell turn-off. It is illegal to stop on a freeway and the officers became suspicious when they saw three men transferring boxes from the truck to the LDV.
Upon further investigation they found five hundred and ninety eight (598) bunches of methcathinone (CAT) with an estimated street value of between R30 000 and R40 000. The Traffic Officers arrested three suspects with the assistance of the South African Police Services Dog Unit.
The suspects face charges relating to the illegal possession of a banned substance and drug trafficking. The case is currently being investigated by the Brackenfell Police Services.
The circumstances relating to the origin and destination of the consignment are being investigated.
"Routine traffic patrols provide a major deterrent to all forms of crime. A case such as this highlights the importance of increased visible patrols on all major routes by Traffic Services", said spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services, Chief Inspector Merle Lourens.
