Funding handovers concluded to confirm support to WC sporting federations

8 June 2022

On Tuesday, 7 June 2022, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais concluded a series of cheque handovers that have taken place over the past month as funding was ceremoniously handed over to sporting federations and municipalities across the province.

The event saw Minister Marais sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Old Mutual as a long-standing partner of the department. This MOU confirms the partnership with the department for the current financial year and ensures that the relationship with Old Mutual can continue.

Minister Maras also handed over funding of R1 369 030.00 to the Western Cape Provincial Sporting Confederation. This funding will support the confederation in hosting major events as well as supporting sporting activities and development in the province.

Chief Director: Sport and Recreation, Dr Lyndon Bouah, thanked both Old Mutual and the confederation for their continued support and partnership with the department. He emphasized the importance of these kind of partnerships to ensure the province can continue its work in developing sporting codes and hosting major events.

Minister Marais said that sport in the province was growing rapidly. “We are excited to see all the big sporting events returning to Cape Town after the past two years. We look forward to hosting these big events in the province again and we are thankful for the continued support of our various partners to ensure we can keep growing sport in the province.” she said.

Both Luschen Govender of Old Mutual and JP Naude from the confederation expressed their thanks to the department for the continued support and cooperation.

DCAS has over the past month distributed funding to sport federations in all six regions of the province to ensure that their important work can continue.
