Eyewitnesses Assist Metro Police to Arrest Theft Suspects

15 September 2010

A swift reaction from Metro Police officers led to the arrest of two suspects for theft from a motor vehicle on Tuesday evening, 14 September, in Strand Street, Cape Town.

Metro Police CCTV operators alerted members of the Camera Response Unit to two suspects attempting to rob items from a Volkswagen Polo parked in front of the Tulip Inn hotel.

On arrival, the officers found that the left front passenger window had been shattered. While taking statements from eye-witnesses at the scene, the officers were informed that the suspects had left in a metered taxi. The eye-witnesses also provided a description of the suspects and the taxi.

Officers stopped the taxi in Strand Street, with the two suspects still inside. A Garmin Nuvi GPS Device allegedly stolen from the Volkswagen Polo was found in their possession.

"Once the two suspects had been positively identified by the witnesses, they were arrested and charged with theft," said Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro

On Wednesday, Metro Police officers arrested a 17-year old suspect in Bonteheuwel for possession of a stolen firearm and ammunition. The officers had responded to a shooting incident at the Modacks Shopping centre. A CZ75 firearm and nine 9mm rounds were confiscated.
