EPWP’s Siyenyuka Programme celebrates success

On Thursday, 22 June 2017, 32 trainees graduated from the Siyenyuka Contractor Development Programme (CDP) at a ceremony in Paarl.

The CDP is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), and aims to develop the skills of emerging contractors in the construction industry so that their businesses can become financially sustainable. This programme helps to give effect to the Provincial Strategic Goal (PSG) 1 “create opportunities for growth and jobs”.

“The Contractor Development Programme aims to assist contractors become ethical in how they conduct their businesses, never to compromise on the quality of work they deliver, and to be vigilant to unscrupulous behaviour in the construction industry”, said Pat Jenniker, Director: EPWP Construction Industry, Innovation and Empowerment.

The graduates are all emerging Western Cape business owners registered as Grade 1 or 2 contractors by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). The training has equipped them with the knowledge and skills they need to run thriving businesses.

“I would like to thank EPWP for this programme that will help us manage our businesses effectively. EPWP should keep on supporting us,” said emerging contractor Zimkhitha Lugonga.

Ricardo January and Vuyo Royi, trainees who passed away during the training, were honoured on the day.

“It is on occasions like these that the Department can acknowledge your success,” said Richard Petersen, Chief Director: EPWP at the event. He congratulated all the trainees who were graduating and urged them to always conduct their business in an ethical manner.
