Enjoy the Festive Season Safely and Responsibly

9 December 2009

The Minister of Community Safety, Adv. Lennit Max, would like to wish the people of the Western Cape, as well as all visitors, a joyful and safe Festive Season with their loved ones.

It is of the utmost importance that everyone behave responsibly and always consider their own as well as the safety of other's during this time.

Max also encourages the youth to think and act safe and also referred to the recent road accidents in which nine (9) learners have tragically lost their lives.

Max says that these fatalities has left communities with great sadness, but that it should find a good purpose if it can motivate people to display more responsible behaviour on our roads.

Max said that one death is one too many. Though the Provincial Traffic, partnering with the Police as well as Metro Police and Traffic, will continue to ensure that the safety of all road users is secured, the full and sincere cooperation of the public is paramount in this regard.

Provincial Traffic, through their Integrated Summer Traffic Operational Programme and Operation Vala, will continue with road blocks and vehicle check points as to ensure that any vehicles that is not roadworthy or any driver that is under the influence of alcohol, be removed from the road.

Max today launched the Blue Eagle car squad, which are unmarked high powered vehicles that is successfully policing moving violations and other offences on our national roads.

Traffic as well as police officers are not taking any leave over the festive season and will be deployed at various points and venues across the province to secure the safety of people.

Max also appealed to people to be aware of any suspicious behaviour or criminal intent in their area and report it immediately to the police.

The Department of Community Safety as well as the Department of Transport and Public Works will ensure that through their joint road safety campaign that all road users arrive safely home.
