Disaster Response Teams Continue with Salvaging Operations of Stranded Vessel

9 September 2009
The salvor Smit Amandla has commenced with preparations and the removal of 660 tons of fuel currently onboard the bulk carrier 'Seli 1' that stranded off Dolphin Beach.

The City's Disaster Risk Management Centre has established a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) on Dolphin Beach to co-ordinate and manage the situation and will be keeping a watchful eye on the operation.

The surrounding area has been cordoned off and the site is restricted to disaster response and emergency crew members only.

No water sport activities such as surfing, kite surfing, jet skis and boats are allowed within the restricted area of 500m radius around the ship.

The airspace in the immediate vicinity has also been restricted and only government and emergency aircraft are permitted in the area with permission.

The removal of the fuel is a pro-active measure to ensure that risk to the environment from oil pollution is reduced. Furthermore the necessary disaster plans have been activated to minimise the impact should there be a spill and all relevant role players have been placed on high alert.

An appeal is made to members of the public who observe or discover any items such as survival crafts or medicine that is washed-out from the vessel to contact the nearest South African Police Services station, call 10111 or the City's Disaster Risk Management Centre on 080 911 HELP (4357).
