Department Launches October Transport Month in Koekenaap

1 October 2015

The Department of Transport and Public Works launched its October Transport Month campaign with the “Safe Kids Walk This Way” road safety event at Koekenaap Primary School in the Lower Olifants River Valley on 1 October 2015. The event formed part of Long Short Walk, a global road safety campaign.

Traffic officials taught learners about the importance of obeying road signs and rules, and the Department’s Road Safety Management component handed out pamphlets. Wearing reflective sashes, the group of learners and their teachers walked to a railway crossing where they were shown how to cross safely.

Principal Eddie Cloete said the intervention is important, especially for learners who have to walk long distances to school.

“The safety of learners is important to us and we value such joint initiatives to educate them,” he said.

The Department appeals to members of the public to keep themselves safe and model good pedestrian behaviour for children so that they learn good habits. Over time, this will help to reduce the risk of pedestrian injuries and deaths.
