Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Celebrates Africa Day

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) commemorated Africa Day by recognising outstanding sportspeople at an event at the Artscape in Cape Town. Africa Day takes place annually on 25 May to mark the establishment in 1963 of the Organisation of African Unity. Celebrations all over the continent highlight the diversity, cultural and economic potential of Africa and its many successes. Consuls from four African countries attended the event - Ms Violet Hanse (Namibia), Mr Pamphile Andriantsiraseheno (Madagascar), Mr Apollinario Jose Pereira (Angola) and Mr Cesar Gouveia (Mozambique).

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, handed over certificates of excellence to South African athletes from various sporting codes who have excelled on the international stage over the past year. This year marks the 20th year of South Africa's return to international competition.

Minister Meyer said that the achievement of these sportsmen and women made him feel proud to be an African: "We are proud Africans and we love Africa."

DCAS is planning to honour outstanding athletes every year for their contribution to sport and to foster social inclusivity. The people of the province are opening their arms to the great diversity of people on the rest of the continent.

Global tourism to Africa is increasing and the minister said that he regards the people of Africa as its real asset. He told the athletes: "Your family members, sport councils and trainers make sacrifices in order for you to shine and by recognising excellence today, we're already achieving more."

Supporting greater inclusivity through sports and culture is one of the many ways that the Western Cape Government demonstrates that we can do more together.
