DCAS hosts junior sailors from Qingdao

11 April 2018

From 2 April 2018 to 9 April 2018, the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and South African Sailing Western Cape (SASWC) hosted a delegation of junior sailors with their coach and team manager from Qingdao in the Shandong province of China.  It was their first visit to South Africa and a special farewell ceremony was held on 9 April 2018 at the Royal Cape Yacht Club.

The team participated in the Western Cape Sailing Championships in Langebaan from 6 to 8 April. Qu Zijiao (11) finished third out of 23 sailors from China and South Africa. Their visit forms part of a Youth Sailing Exchange Programme between SA Sailing Western Cape and the Qingdao Water Sports Administration Centre in Shandong, China.

This initiative stems from the international sport exchange programme that was signed between DCAS and the Sports Bureau of Shandong Province in October 2007. In August 2018 a team of Western Cape Sailors will be competing at the prestigious Qingdao International Sailing Week in Shandong Province.

Director of Sport Promotion, Thabo Tutu and Deputy Director Mr Bennett Bailey expressed their gratitude on behalf of DCAS to SASWC for hosting the Chinese delegation. They also wished the sailors a safe trip home.

DCAS offers sporting opportunities to youth. Partnerships such as these enable us to ensure we create an active province, BETTER TOGETHER.
