Crackdown on Liquor Issues at Nightclub in Parow Central Business District

15 August 2010

A number of night clubs in the Parow Central Business District (CBD) were fined for various offences on Friday night (13 August 2010) during a joint operation between City Law Enforcement's Liquor Enforcement Unit, the Vice Squad, Metro Police and Parow South African Police Service (SAPS). The operation formed part of the Liquor Enforcement Unit's ongoing operations throughout the city.

During the joint operation on Friday, eight night clubs were inspected for possible contraventions relating to the Business Act and the Community Safety By-law. Forty thousand rand (R14 000) worth of fines were issued for contraventions such as conducting a business without a valid business licence, failure to maintain fire extinguishers, failure to possess a population certificate and the obstruction of escape doors.

Minors were also found at some of the clubs. In these cases, both the owners and the minors (after being removed from the premises) received warnings.

The Liquor Enforcement Unit will do regular follow-up inspections on all the premises that were found not complying with the requirements of the Business Act and Fire & Safety Regulations.
