Collective efforts and achievements at Overberg BTG

8 October 2018

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) hosted the 2018 Overberg Better Together Games (BTG) on 5 October 2018 at the Caledon Sports Grounds in partnership with the Theewaterskloof Municipality, Old MutualNedbank and Peninsula Beverages.

The Theewaterskloof District Municipal Mayor, Christelle Vosloo, accompanied by various local municipal councilors from Overstrand, Agulhas and Overberg, welcomed the enthusiastic participants and their loyal supporters. The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, expressed how happy she was about the fact that the very first Better Together Games was hosted in the Overberg District. She encouraged friendly competition against each other and trusted that everybody would enjoy the different sporting codes and be safe.

This year the Overberg brought together teams from across the district who participated in many codes that varied from tug-of-war, soccer and rugby to golf, dominoes and netball. Different teams participated from as far as Agulhas and they were proudly united by the National Anthem and the traditional parade, where distinct team spirit and creativity were showcased. The Annual National Recreation Day took place across the country on the same day and put a positive spin on most of the activities, where collective efforts and achievements were acknowledged.

The Central Karoo kickstarted the 2018 BTG in the province on 21 September at the Rustdene Sports Grounds in Beaufort West, followed by the Eden/Garden Route on 28 September at Rosemore Sports Complex in George. The Cape Winelands event will take place on 12 October at the Boland Park Stadium in Worcester, with the West Coast on 19 October at the Vredenburg Sports Grounds. The Metropole Better Together Games are scheduled for 26 October at the Blue Down Sports Stadium and will be another highlight in the province during National Recreation Month.

DCAS encourages employees to use sport as a tool for team spirit. Let’s invest in our general well-being and improve our potential and corporate productivity. BETTER TOGETHER.
