City youth partner with cyclists to complete Cape Town Cycle Tour

Four differently-abled young people will participate in this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour as part of an awareness drive around the importance of accessibility at major events.

A joint initiative of the Warriors on Wheels foundation and Cape Town Tourism, the young entrants will be in buggies, and assisted by cyclists.

This evening (7 March 2017), Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, will join the team for a ride ahead of the Cape Town Cycle Tour on Saturday.

The participants are Ruan Belcher,19 years old from Edgemead, Zeah Dammes, 11 years old from Elsies River, Andry Cloete, 15 years old from Moorreesburg and Damian Gower, 18-years old from Constantia.

Minister Winde, who is completing his 10th Cape Town Cycle Tour ride this year, said: “We need to ensure that our spaces and events are equipped to accommodate all residents and visitors. Universal accessibility must be a key priority. These young people are eager to ride the race and have partnered with cyclists who will assist them do the tour.”

TIME:              6:30pm

VENUE:           Green Point Lighthouse, short ride to Sea Point Pavilion swimming pool.

                        The ride will be followed by a media briefing.
