City Urges U2 Fans to Use Public Transport for Friday's Concert

16 February 2011

City officials are predicting heavy traffic congestion on Friday 18 February due to the U2 concert and urge concertgoers to use the public transport services, free to fans with tickets, to get to and from Cape Town Stadium.

"There will be no general parking available at Cape Town Stadium or its immediate surrounds, and parking in the city centre is also severely limited. All concertgoers are encouraged to use the identified Park-and-Ride facilities outside the city centre. The best way to avoid congestion and frustration is to arrive early and to use public transport," says the City's Manager for Transport Network Operations, Peter Sole.

Building on the World Cup transport arrangements, specific event-related public transport services have been laid on for the concert. With special trains operating after the concert and the shuttle services from UCT and Hout Bay fans will be able to get to and from the Stadium easily using the Fan Walk or the Stadium shuttle from the Civic Centre. This will allow fans to get to the concert on time and also return home quickly.

Those travelling by rail can make use of the Park-and-Rides at rail stations where security guards will be present until half an hour after the last train home has left. The parking is free.

Detailed information is available from the City's Transport Information Centre on 0800 54 64 63, transport.info@capetown.gov or on www.capetown.gov.za. The rail time tables are available on www.capemetrorail.co.za

A nominal parking fee will be payable at the following Park-and-Rides served by rail:

  • Goodwood - at GrandWest with access to the rail station via the Casino
  • Century City - at Ratanga Junction with a free shuttle service to the station
  • Oosterzee - on the Settlers High School fields

Bus shuttle Park-and-Rides will also be operational from:

  • University of Cape Town (UCT) Upper Campus in Rondebosch
  • Kronendal Primary School at the sports field off Andrews Road in Hout Bay (a nominal parking fee applies)
  • On-street at Maiden's Cove or in the municipal parking area off Victoria Road in Camps Bay

Free to ticket holders, the first buses will be ready to leave from UCT and Hout Bay at 14:00 with the last buses before the concert leaving at 21:00. The last return shuttles will depart at 01:00 and run from Main Road (opposite York Road) to Hout Bay and from the Civic Centre bus station to UCT.

The Stadium shuttle between the Civic Centre and Stadium bus stations is free and the service starts at 14:00 with the last bus departing from the Stadium at 01:00.

This concert sees a larger number of people attending an event at the stadium than during the World Cup. Those insisting on using private vehicles may not find parking and are likely to be stuck in traffic.

"By using public transport, U2 fans will have no trouble getting to and from the concert as preference will be given to the movement of public transport vehicles," says Sole.
