City Traffic Officers arrest Drunk Drivers at Roadblock

20 September 2009
City Traffic officers maintained their focus on motorists driving while under the influence of alcohol, in the Mowbray and Sea Point areas on Friday and Saturday evening when 27 motorists, including three females, were arrested on this charge.

On Friday evening at the roadblock along Liesbeek Parkway, a driver failed to stop and intentionally sped away in the direction of the N2. One of the officers gave chase and apprehended him on the N2 incoming just before the off ramp to Main Road, Mowbray. He was escorted back to the roadblock where he underwent a breathalyzer test. His test reading of 1.38 was recorded as being the highest for the evening.

At the Sea Point roadblock on Saturday, a female passenger was arrested for riotous behavior when the driver was arrested for alleged drunk driving.

"Driving whilst intoxicated is exceptionally dangerous and irresponsible. If you're going to socialise and have a drink, arrange for someone of sober habits to drive you home or call a taxi," says Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services. "Motorists are also reminded that the legal limit is 0,05grams per 100ml of blood".

The weekend roadblocks resulted in 630 traffic fines being issued for offences ranging from failing to carry a driving licence in the vehicle to not displaying number plates, illegal parking and various mechanical defects in the vehicles stopped. One vehicle was suspended from use on the road as the driver had not heeded a previous warning to replace the illegal number plate displayed on the car.

Checks were also done for outstanding warrants of arrest using the number plate recognition camera. Of the 597 vehicles scanned, 52 were found to have warrants outstanding and the drivers were given warnings to report to Green Point Traffic Department's Warrants Office on Monday morning to arrange for settlement.
