City to Screen Joint Sitting of Parliament on the Grand Parade

8 December 2013
The City of Cape Town will give residents the opportunity to gather together to watch the Joint Sitting of Parliament that is being held to commemorate the late Nelson Mandela’s life tomorrow, 9 December 2013.

The parliamentary sitting will be shown live on big screens from the Grand Parade in Darling Street from 14:00 when it starts.

The National Government has explained that the joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament – the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces – will honour and commemorate the former president, Nelson Mandela.

Residents in Cape Town will be given a chance to come together and witness this momentous occasion as it is broadcast, fittingly, in a space that holds a special place in Mandela’s history. He delivered his freedom speech from the balcony of the City Hall overlooking the Grand Parade, just hours after his release from prison on 11 February 1990.

Members of the public are reminded that they can lay flowers and write messages in condolence books situated on the Grand Parade.

Note to editors
The City of Cape Town has set up a dedicated Media Centre for all accredited journalists at the City Hall on the Grand Parade in Darling Street. Members of the media are welcome to use this media centre as a base from which to work.

Media can obtain accreditation at the City Library/Drill Hall on Buitenkant Street near the City Hall, between 09:00 and 16:00 this week (except Wednesday). From here, they will be directed to the Media Centre in the City Hall.

In addition, the Media Centre will serve as a venue for media briefings which will be announced ahead of the time.
