City Launches New Tourism Initiative

14 December 2006
The City of Cape Town has launched a new pilot tourism route, based on rail transport.

The new Southern Line Tourism Route, stretching from the Cape Town Central Business District (CBD) to Simon's Town, is a partnership pilot project between the City of Cape Town, Cape Town Tourism and SARCC Metrorail.

The new route includes six stations on the route which offers various tourist attractions which can be reached within a two kilometre radius from each station. The stations are Cape Town, Observatory, Newlands, Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Simon's Town. Each of these stations will display maps of the area, indicating tourist attractions and services.

"We have decided on the Cape Town to Simon's Town route as a pilot project as it already offers a wide spectrum of tourist activities. Local residents and visitors can use the train ticket between the two destinations and visit all the tourist sites at the six identified stops or select only those which they want to visit," says Theuns Vivian, Manager: Destination Development of the City's Tourism Department.

Information brochures about the new route will be distributed via all Cape Town Tourism Visitor Information Centres across the metropole. Cape Town Tourism with SARCC Metrorail will also provide training to SARCC Metrorail staff and security who are involved in the new initiative.

"Once the pilot project proves to be successful, we will expand it to other areas. This new initiative will make the tourism industry more accessible to all tourists, as it can create and stimulate economic opportunities on the route whilst reducing congestion on the City's roads.

"SARCC Metrorail has deployed additional security at the identified stations, as well as on the trains," he says.

Train tickets from Cape Town to Simon's Town cost R12,00 (1st class) and R7,30 (3rd class) one way.
