City hands over Care Packs to SAPS for Crime Victims

20 September 2009
A pilot project to supply care packs to victims of rape and abuse began at three Khayelitsha police stations (today) Monday, 21 September. Sixty care packs were handed over to the three stations in the Charlotte Maxeke Sub-Council (10).

The project was initiated by Sub-Council Chairperson, Councillor Stuart Pringle and the care packs were donated by Khayelitsha Superspar.

Councillor Pringle said: "It is hoped that this pilot project will be extended as more sponsors come forward and that ultimately all trauma centres at all the police stations in Cape Town will be able to provide care packs to women and children who report that they have suffered abuse."

Each care pack contains nappies or sanitary towels, baby bottles, soup, fruit juice, sweets, face-cloths, soap, soft toys and a list of emergency contact numbers.

Councillor Pringle added: "The initial packs were put together by the organisation Cape Town Cares, but we hope to in future involve members of the greater Khayelitsha community in putting the packs together."
