City Donation Aids Work of Jehova Jaireh Welfare Organisation

29 March 2007
The City of Cape Town's Social Development Department will be handing over soup kitchen appliances, food supplies and sound system equipment to the value of R40 000 to the Jehova Jaireh Welfare Organisation on 29 March 2007 at 19:00 at the Blackheath Civic Centre. The sound equipment is for the organisation's Abapathi Youth Group.

Social Development District Manager, Justine Fransman, will hand over the equipment. Guest speaker will be Cllr Elizabeth Thompson, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater. Among the guests of honour will be Ward Councillor Pieter van Dalen and Councillor Aaron Kallie.

Jehova Jaireh have been operating the soup kitchen in the informal area of the City's Happy Valley Temporary Relocation Area on two days in each week for the past six months. The City's donation will strengthen their operations.

The Abapathi Youth Group are also active in the same community. At a recent three day camp they identified five key areas that negatively affect the youth:

  • Teenage drug abuse
  • Gangsterism
  • Child rape/abuse
  • Teenage suicide
  • Teenage pregnancy

The youth group will meet every Thursday to, with the help of the community of Blackheath, find ways of overcoming these issues.

All media are invited to attend.
