City to Close Central Library for Three Weeks in December for Stocktake and Maintenance

21 November 2010

The City of Cape Town's Central Library in the Central Business District (CBD) will be closed from 01 - 18 December 2010. Stocktaking will take place between 01 and 11 December and any issues arising from the stocktaking process will be addressed between 12 and 18 December.

The closure will also allow staff to prepare the library for its migration to the Brocade Library Management system in 2011.

Unfortunately lending of materials is not feasible during the maintenance period, but a staff member will be on duty to receive materials returned to the library by users. The City urges the public to make use of one of four nearby libraries during this period, namely Kloof Street, Vredehoek, Camps Bay and Sea Point libraries.

The Knowledge Commons will be closed from 01 - 03 December for repairs, but will remain open for the rest of the maintenance period, from 08:00 - 16:00, Monday to Friday. Visitors will be able to enter this section as well as the reading room for magazines and newspapers from the rear entrance of the library.

"We thank residents for their patience during this time, and ask that they bear with us while we ensure that the library can operate more efficiently and better benefit all of its users," said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Brett Herron.
