City Announce Cape Town Peace Cup Soccer Tournament

29 September 2009
The City of Cape Town's Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department, in partnership with the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo, Norway and the South African Peace Conference, will officially announce the Cape Town Peace Cup Soccer Tournament at an event in Athlone.

Gert Bam, the City's Director, Sport, Recreation and Amenities, Kjitil Siem, CEO of the PSL and Dr. Irvin Khoza, Chairperson of the PSL, will officiate at the event.

Date: Thursday, 01 October

Time: 12:30 for 13:30

Venue: Athlone Stadium, Conference Room, Athlone

All media are welcome to attend.

The organisations involved in arranging the Soccer Tournament hope that the event will play a significant role in fostering non-racism, peace and harmony.

Cape Town will simultaneously host the Nobel Peace Exhibition at the National Gallery in the Company's Gardens. It will highlight the lives and accomplishments of the four South African Peace Laureates, namely Albert Luthuli, Nelson Mandela, F W de Klerk and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The tournament was linked to the Nobel Peace Centre through the efforts of Kjitil Siem, CEO of the PSL and CEO of the SA Peace Conference.

It will highlight South Africa's long journey to democracy and its role in soccer on this continent, specifically as host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament will be for players aged 19 years and under.

The international teams participating are Manchester United (England), Inter Milan (Italy), Barcelona (Spain) and Stabak (Norway). Ajax, Santos, Supersport and Pirates are the South African participants.
