Chrysalis graduates deployed to Khayelitsha hotspot

15 June 2020

Today, the Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, held a press briefing on the training provided to Chrysalis youth graduates, marking their deployment into the Khayelitsha targeted COVID-19 hotspot, the day before youth day.

The graduates will be deployed in Khayelitsha from today, Monday 15 June. The briefing and training took place at the Isiviviana Centre, Town 2, Khayelitsha. Please see photos included.

Minister Fritz said, “The deployment of Chrysalis graduates in Khayelitsha has been ensured by working in partnership with the Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF), Chrysalis Academy, the Department of Health and Doctors Without Borders (MSF). These crucial partnerships are playing a massive role in ensuring that we flatten the curve in the most affected communities by ensuring that our graduates are adequately trained and prepared.”

Minister Fritz added, “A total of 60 Chrysalis Graduates will be deployed at various shopping centers and Community Health Facilities. They will be responsible for creating awareness of COVID-19 by encouraging the community to adhere to social distancing protocols including washing and sanitising their hands regularly and wearing masks.”

Minister Fritz continued, “It is very positive to see the number of young people who are playing their part in stopping the spread, particularly as we approach youth day. Their efforts will ensure that we spread awareness, challenge stigmas and ultimately assist in tasks including social distance management within targeted COVID-19 hotspots such as Khayelitsha.”

The Western Cape Government cabinet adopted a Whole of Government targeted hotspot plan to tackle the spread of Covid-19 in high population areas, where high transmission rates have been recorded. It aims to change individual and community behavior to slow the spread of the virus and save lives in areas that go beyond districts and even sub-districts. This is done in partnership with all spheres of government.
